Teaching and Training

The practice has had a long association with the Banbury Vocational Training Scheme for General Practice, with prospective general practitioners spending a year with us in a supervised role, towards the end of an integrated programme of hospital and community-based jobs relevant to primary care.   These are fully qualified doctors who are completing the extra statutory training required to become a GP.

In addition we have more recently collaborated with Oxford University Medical School to provide training for 5th year medical students who complete a 6-week part-time placement with us.   They see patients under close supervision by the partners.

We also have community Obstetric and Gynaecology junior doctors with us one day a week – again these are qualified doctors undertaking further specialised training in this field completing a variety of hospital and community posts.

From time to time we have freshly-qualified junior doctors working with us in their ‘houseman’ or probationary year.   Again they are closely supervised.   It is a Department of Health priority to increase their General Practice experience so these sorts of doctors may appear more often at the surgery in the future.

Finally our attached staff (Health Visitors, District Nurses and Midwives) also have attached trainees from time to time, working in the community under close supervision.

Although specific doctors are responsible for the training programmes, we see ourselves as a training practice, which means that all our staff members participate in the education, assessment, and support of colleagues in training.   It is a joint responsibility, which we all share, with the aim of providing a complete and rounded learning experience.   Relevant individual responsibilities are as follows:

Dr Jill Edwards Associate Advisor, Oxford Deanery
- responsible for managing GP training programmes at a county level  within Oxfordshire

Dr Caroline Keenan GP Trainer, Banbury VTS
- personal supervisor for GP Registrars

Dr Stephen Blake GP Trainer, Banbury VTS
- personal supervisor for GP Registrars

Dr Mary Keenan Obs & Gynae Tutor
- Supervising Obstetric & Gynaecology SHOs

Dr Stephen Quelch GP Tutor, Oxford University Medical School
- Supervising 5th year medical students

We find that our patients generally value participating in the training of colleagues; you will always be asked if you consent to a trainee being involved in your care.  You are of course free to opt not to do so if you wish.
